Hello, my name is Ben and I'm a Chinese-American journalist with nine years of experience writing and editing in Hong Kong and New York. I'm currently based in Hong Kong, where I cover consumer tech for Forbes, South China Morning Post, Abacus, and my own YouTube channel. I'm also a registered film critic on Rotten Tomatoes.
As an independent tech content producer, I often attend trade shows and product launches, where I write features on industry trends, straight forward product reviews; and produce video content. I've broken industry news that have been picked up by major tech outlets such as The Verge, and I've interviewed senior execs from Google, Huawei, LG, and Xiaomi.
Before the tech stuff, I was a general writer/reporter/editor with bylines in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Men's Journal, Complex, Fusion, CNN and Kill Screen. I've also held staff writing/editing positions with the Village Voice, Sports Illustrated, South China Morning Post and Time Out Hong Kong.
Here are some samples of my work:
-- for the New York Times, I interviewed NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on NBA's business interests in Asia.
-- a Forbes column on how NBA star Steph Curry's shooting is so accurate, it broke video game algorithms. This piece went viral and got referenced in TIME, GQ, Bleacher Report, BBC, Gawker, Yahoo, video game sites, Portuguese sites, Spanish sites, Australian sites ... and it led to ABC and NPR to doing a TV and radio segment, respectively.
-- for New York magazine, the very first profile of former NBA player Stephon Marbury's new life in China.
-- a South China Morning Post front page story on the origin of the Holga logomography camera.
-- a 4,000 word cover story on Hong Kong's semi-illegal underground poker scene for Time Out Hong Kong. (The club has since been shut down by cops and many of the players blamed that on me even though they spoke to me on record. *shrugs*)
-- on-ground coverage of Occupy Wall Street's big 2012 May Day movement for the Village Voice.
-- covering Hong Kong's pro-democracy protest for Fusion (now known as Splinter).
-- for Forbes, I visited LG Electronic's production line in Seoul and checked out how the company put its phones together.
My work has been cited by The Verge, San Jose Mercury News, ESPN, and I've been appeared as a guest on NPR, Voice of America, LA Times Sunday Magazine and RTHK, speaking about random cultural stuff.
Thanks for reading. I can be reached at bencsin AT gmail DOT com.
